It wasn’t all fun. The process was difficult. Naturally I’m proud to be part of Michael’s HIStory. I was flattered that he asked me to sing with him. I adore his music and his talent and consider him the greatest entertainer in the world. But it had been 13 years since I had worked with him and that was only to sing a small background part on ‘PYT’ from his Thriller album. When it came time to record ‘Scream’ and plan the video, Michael was distracted. He was uncomfortable with the idea, and there were forces determined to undermine the concept. I had in mind the character from La Femme Nikita, someone tougher than nails. In the end, the choice of director and choreographer was left to me. I was happy to see it through, but Michael resisted. He was uncertain of the direction. Finally, just because he had so many other things on his mind, he relinquished control. But for a while it was rough going. I learned that he has his ways, and I have mine. I don’t respect his art any less; I’ll always consider him a genius. But now I realize that he and I have different visions when it comes to music videos. I’m glad mine was realized, but I wouldn’t want to go through the struggle again.
interesting. very interesting.
